Hyperactive hunter/getherer instincts, or a true love of crap (bric-a-brac, knickknacks, knickknackery, and whatnot)??

Three words: Hard Rock Café.

What do those words remind you of? If you’re like me, (and for your sake, I hope you’re not) they remind you of super cool T-shirts that could be worn with pride while telling the world, “Yeah, I went to London, and I spent my time in an overpriced burger franchise that defines commercialism and all that is wrong with American culture. Sweet!”

So thought it would be fun to make a “Top 10 List Of Things I Am Ashamed To Admit I Collected Back In The Day”

But all I could thing of were Hard Rock café shot glasses, and Beanie Babies.

I also collected rocks, My Little Ponies, and pictures of baby animals, but I’m not ashamed nor am I embarrassed by that. Because rocks, and little animals (ponies or otherwise) are still cool. In my opinion at least.

Thought bubble: Come to think of it- is Hard Rock Café even in business anymore? If so, I wonder how they’re denim jacket sales are doing now that Planet Hollywood is gonzo??

In Summary…

Good: Ummmm...pretty....
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Oooooo... I want to brush they're sheeny manes…

So nice!!! I want to hug the baby tiger! (before it turns in to a potentially man-eating carnivore)

Bad…

Boooooo.... hissssssss.

A hex on you little bear! You and and all of your bean-bag friends who ate up all of my time and money!!!

I can’t be the only one who collected stupid things can I? Friends, please tell me that I’m not alone. And if you know anyone who wants to buy about 50 Ty Beanie Babies (all in mint condition of course…) let me know. AND if you can use the words "knicknackery" and "bric-a-brac" and "whatnot" in the same sentence, then you get extra double letter, tripple words score points!!

THANK YOU AL GORE, FOR INVENTING THE INTERNET!

If I just came out and said, “You need to check out this terribly cheesy web site ASAP!” You might start to wonder how I ever came across it.

Someone at work today was saying that he had Barry Manilo’s “Mandy” stuck in his head. Which of course got it stuck in MY head. But I only knew the first few lines of the chorus, and when all you have is “Oh Mandy, you came and you… did…somethingorother…” it is MOST unsatisfying.

So I ran a Google search for “Mandy” and “Barry” and got this site. I was delighted to see that I’d found a site that didn’t just have the lyrics, but actually played the song as the site’s background music!

Vow! I love the pansies in the background! Lyrics, floral background, angelic photos of some sort of woodland-dwelling fairy? Bravo! So of course I had to check on the “Back” button… Where I found a whole GARDEN of tender love songs. All played in AM-radio-quality on via my internet browser!

So I hope you enjoy this site as much as I have. Some of the must-see/hear songs, in my opinion, are Lay Lady Lay, Hero, Leather and Lace, Do ‘Ya, In My Room, and The Rose. Please note that I chose these primarily based on the photo/color scheme that was used to visually support each song.

I have a feeling that I might be exploring more of what Lady Jaye has to offer throughout the weekend. Hummm…. But suddenly I just feel like breaking out the lavender essential oils, bathing in bees wax soaps, maybe burning some herbal candles, and curling up with a green tea, a wool blanket, and a self-help book…

(If anyone out there knows how I can pipe these songs over the web on MY site, please, please, PLEASE let me know! I'd love to share some love songs with all of you. It would be my own little way of saying, "Thanks for stopping by my site!")

Message to the Women’s Cosmetics Industry: GFY!!! We actually get BETTER with age!

In case you’re not a potty-mouth by nature, that stands for: Go F*ck Yourself. I’m sick and tired of looking in the mirror and thinking : oh no… I’m starting to get older… my skin really WON”T stay firm and elasticy for all eternity!! Cripes! I hope there is an under-eye cream or something that can help!! I realized today that I’m actually getting better with age, so take THAT cosmetics industry!

The background:

After reading my post about malted wine beverages of yesteryear, my dear friend Beth was inspired to scavenge through some old pictures from college to see if she could find any photographic evidence of Cisco consumption. As I foggily recall, it was her “Family Drink” in the house. My oh my, what a dysfunctional family… Anyway- she couldn’t find any photos from freshman year, when she and her “twin” Amy imbibed the delicious malt libation that is.. Cisco, for the very first time. However, she DID find this choice shot of the two of us during our sophomore year…. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Clearly a picture like this prompts one to continue looking through the box of old pictures to find more marvels. Her husband commented, “Oh man, is that Gina? She looks… prepubescent!?”
Okay, so we clearly look like ASS. But afterall, that bottle of Cisco is almost half empty- of COURSE we’re going to look a little… “off.” But here’s another whopper:
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
This is from Dad’s weekend, and as you can read from the Party Pic frame, the year was 1997.

Nice boyish sweaters huh? Yeah, I guess “Lesbian Chic” was the look we were going for? I mean really… It was Dad’s weekend though, so I do remember that every single sorority girl seemed to turn it down a notch (or two… or three) that weekend as far as the skanky-ho factor was concerned. But seriously, juxtapose that photo with the fact that I now drive a Subaru and have a dog? Smart money would bet that my future would include comments like, “What a beautiful baby! Which one of you is the birth mom?”

And no, that wasn’t REALY Diet Pepsi that we were drinking, but rather Busch Lite that was secretly poured into Pepsi cans in the SAE’s laundry room. You see, Beth and I both were on House Council that year, and the campus had just “gone dry.” Because we were in a position of leadership, we were really trying to enforce it and set a good example…. Yes, I see now that we were missing the point.

Hey Gina, 1997 called. It wants it mom-hair back. (yes, that was in direct reference to a term I learned recently on Mommymatic!)

But aren’t our Dad’s the cutest?

So here we are present day for a point-by-point comparison. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

While it is quite tempting to leave it that- with one photo where we both look relatively nice (afterall, it was from her wedding, there was “hair and make-up” involved”)- I am going to leave you with a mini-montage to see for yourself. Some “real life” pictures- some posed, some not, some cute, some not so cute. But all in all, I think we’ve done better with time. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is universal throughout woman-kind.

My take home message (as long as we’ve been talking about malted wine beverages…): Girls are like malt liquor, fun, obnoxious, tasteless and well, pretty cheap. Women are like good red wine: fabulous, and ever improving (assuming proper corking and storage).

Wait wait old man... are you Bartle or Jaymes?

I was talking to Justin today about how some old-timey clients seem to never get our company name quite right. I mean, I know we’ve had some name changes in the last… 10 years, but come on now. You get a CRAP-TON of mail from us regularly, the commercials, the calls from us, the way the receptionists answer the phones… You’d think folks would start to get it right. So we’re wondering if people who work at Smith Barney and Merrill Lynch get this all the time too: Clients calling in with “questions on my Barney and Smith account,” or “I got a letter today from Salomon Barney…” Which lead into, what if we just started answering the phone with, “Bartles and Jaymes, this is Gina!” Or better yet- what if we spun-off on our own and started a firm and called it “Bartles and Jaymes Investments”?? How sweet would THAT be?

I wondered how much it would cost to buy the trademarked name, after-all, its not like they’re still selling Wine Coolers, right?

Wrong-o my friends. Bartles and Jaymes? Very much alive, and just celebrated their 20th Anniversary by re-releasing the “classic” bottles.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Oh how that green glass and gold-foiled label makes me think of being dizzy in the woods around a camp-fire.

So I’m making a list of my top 5 Nasty-Ass Malted “wine” products to share!! (in no particular Order)

1)Cisco : Image hosted by Photobucket.com
AKA: “liquid crack,” that syrupy wine cooler-type thing that was just so nasty you had to choke it down, only to throw it up. Usually. Reminds me of “Paddle Parties” of yesteryear…

2) Boon’s Farm Strawberry Hill: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Takes me back to the days when I was a senior in highschool and had a college boyfriend. The first time I was legitimately DRUNK, it was from drinking a bottle of this stuff.

3)Bartles and Jaymes (though I never actually drank enough to really BE drunk from it. I do remember thinking, “ I wonder if I’m really drunk yet....” I know, sad.)

4) Mad Dog 20/20: Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I just learned that it’s actually called “Mogan David 20/20” but the MD on the label has given it the Mad Dog pen-name…

5) Pre-made Mimosa. I wish I knew the name of the company that made this stuff, I just remember drinking it from the bottle at “Champagne Breakfasts” before College football games in Pullman. Specifically, at FIJI’s. It’s the stuff that looks like bright orange juice in a champagne bottle… and tastes like fermented, carbonated Orange-Drink from McDonalds… If anyone can find a picture of this product, I will give you bonus points!!

So there you have it. And thank you for your support.

Drunk Off Rock

Oh My Heck. Perhaps you could tell from my last post that I was randomly looking on Wynonna Judd’s homepage yesterday and stumbled upon a few timely events. 1) She was going to be featured on CMT’s “Crossroads” that night with Heart (wow!) 2) That she would be playing in Seattle with the Seattle Symphony in a couple of weeks (Weee!! Talk about good timing!?) and 3) That she would be on Oprah with her whole fan-damily today (Neat, but not quite as exciting as I’m not going to be able to watch it today since I’m…at work)

So I text messaged Lisa to be sure to catch CMT, called Beth to let her know that she should TiVo Oprah and spread the word about Wynonna at the Symphony on October 11th. Last night I cleared my calendar (AKA: “didn’t go to the gym”) to watch the episode of Crossroads. I mean really, how could I not watch this show when it was featuring Heart AND Wynonna?!

It. Was. Awesome.

I can truly say that I was drunk off of rock. Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson (who, by the way, is just the most bad-ass sexy rocker girl I have ever seen) and Wynonna Judd, all on stage at the same time. I felt like I had swallowed a rock valium and could barely lift my jaw off the floor. It ruled. And I think VH-1 got the “Divas” concept totally wrong, as these three together define the concept of all that reins supreme. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

So yeah, I liked the show.

It made me want to be a rock star. But it made me realize that I would have a long way to go, as I can’t really sing (though you may argue that I can if you’re heard me belt out “Gloria” at Karaoke…) and I REALLY can’t play any instruments other than a G-chord on a guitar under Lisa’s most strict supervision.

But heck, just look at The Judds…. Naomi worked as an RN for years, barely making ends meet (because no super-star musician’s ever rose up from “upper middle class”) before she found her harmony with her daughter Wynonna…. Maybe there’s hope for me yet….

So that settles it. Long term goal #1 Have wild-side daughter who likes to sing and form a chart-topping, award winning, trail-blazing singing duo…

Or maybe for a short to medium-term goal I should consider the Heart route and finally concede to a sing-a-long with Lisa…

On a side note, while on her web-page, I also found that Wynonna will be signing copies of her latest release the day after her performance in Seattle. Of all places, she will be at the downtown Costco (which ironically, is one of my favorite businesses of all time). Do you think she would invite me to hang out with her if I brought her a bottle of Drop Dead Red??

Okay- goodnight friends.

Am I a Biker Chick now??

This weekend Jose and I did the “Dam2Dam” bike tour which was a benefit for the Mike Utley Foundation. We took off on Friday night, got the the Holiday Inn Express which was offering fabulously low rates for event participants and started first thing on Saturday morning. Race entry fees included a Tyvek jacket which was printed with the race logo, sponsors etc. Somehow these colors and logos arrived at what was one of the most frightening displays of teal and black that I have ever seen, let alone worn (I’ll post photos soon…). But alas, they were light, wind resistant and made me feel like a official cyclists. And at 8AM in the hills of Wenatchee when you’re in shorts and wicking fabrics (AKA: Freezing your fingers off because its about 40 degrees in the shade), you take any layers that you can get. We set out on our new and nearly new bikes at a nice little pace. By the first rest stop, 12.5 miles in, it was starting to warm up a little, and I was no longer concerned that my fingers would fall off due to the frost-bite and subsequent gangrene that I was anticipating all morning. Lots of snacks and drinks at the first rest-stop, over all, a very nicely run and well-manned event. Met some nice folks while mingling over granola bars and apples.

Onward to the 25 mile mark. We stopped there, again more mingling over apples and local fare. The stop was at a little road-side gift shop/fruit stand that had lots of Columbia Valley wines for sale. We saw the 3rd installment of the Kestrel winery nod to redheads (well, to red wine, but I’m going to take it as a nod to redheads!): The sultry cousin to “Drop Dead Red” from last year, labeled, “Lady in Red.” Haven’t tried the Lady in Red yet, but the Drop Dead Red vol. 2 is a very drinkable wine on its own merits, but the label, (and collecting them all…) is the kicker for me. We wanted to buy it, but I most certainly did not want to carry in my Camel Bak on the 25 mile ride home. Enter Donita, the very nice woman who was the a friend of a friend of a friend of Mike Utley, who was up visiting/helping with the ride. She offered to take any wine we bought back to the post-ride BBQ in her car. Excellent. Add a few bottles to the Jose/Gina wine collection. What can I say, some redheads are in to I Love Lucy, I’m into reasonably priced table wines. A mini photo montage…

Volume 1: She kind of has that Jessica Rabbit thing going on…Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Volume 2: Showing her carefree, tropical side. And nothing says “practical” quite like wearing a wispy bikini and a flower sash when you’re born and raised in Prosser, WA… Image hosted by Photobucket.com

This year, Volume 3: She’s now a “Lady in Red,” has cropped her hair and donned an elegant hat. If I ever make it to the Kentucky Derby, I shall wear a similar hat. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

After we secured safe transport for our wine, we hopped back on the bikes and headed back for the last 25 mile stretch. About ¼ mile down the road, I started wondering if there were weird cracks in the pavement because my ride felt… lumpy. I looked down to discover that I had TWO very flat tires. What the heck?!? “Ah yes, see those giant thorns lodged into your tires?” I said to myself. “Why yes self, I do see them. And they seem to have punctured both tires in about 4 different places. Hey self, good thing you have a patch kit, tire levers and a spare tube just in case!” …. Apparently I walked my bike through a patch of “goat horns” at the rest stop but didn’t know it… it happened to a few other people too. Goat Horns are nasty thorns that grow on a viney cactus-like plant. I’m trying to find a photo to post, but when I google “goat horn” I get an awful lot of weird satanic ritual stuff…

Four tube patches, one snapped Presta valve, then one new spare tube, followed by ANOTHER snapped Presta valve (on new tube), a totally worthless piece of crap hand-pump, a walk back to the rest stop, several minutes of pleading with fellow riders and race volunteers for another spare tube, the acquisition of a floor pump, and some bad-ass tire-changing/fixing/replacing skills I’d aquired by this point, and we were back on the road.

In case you don’t have a road bike, here is a picture of a Presta valve: Image hosted by Photobucket.com That skinny little pin-like screw thing at the top is what snapped off twice after we had inflated the patched tires and were trying to take the pump off the valve. So the lesson learned is: Just like a really good horse- the better they are, the more fragile they are. You can knock around a cheap bike tire valve and have no problem at all. Similarly, you can run around on the trails all day on an old hearty quarter horse named, “Buck” and never have to worry about pulled tendons or abscesses. But if you want performance, you’ve got to baby your equipment. Now I know.

Okay, so we’re back on the road, but this time our contact points (which is a nice way of saying, “butts”) were starting to feel the miles. We made it back in decent time, but were a little humbled to be coming into the finish right next to a pace-line of about 6 serious-looking cyclists who were bantering back and forth things like, “Huh, weird, mine says 104…” “Oh, mine says 103.5, we might need to re-calibrate our odometers…” So yeah, we finished the 50 mile ride in the same time as the elite 100 mile riders. But heck- we had about an hour of road side bike maintenance… and we started about 20 minutes late… and we bought wine along the way! I’d venture to say that we had more fun, and had a steeper learning curve with regards to road-side bike repair…

So that was Saturday. Sunday was decidedly less fitness-oriented. Woke up late, and spent a lazy day in Leavenworth, a Bavarian-styled town that seems to have some sort of festival every weekend. Yeah, its kind of cheesy but still fun. The day was made up of eating lots of food, drinking lots of coffee, and poking around in the touristy shops. We both wondered: If there were an “Adult Store” in Leavenworth, would it too be required to adopt a Bavarian theme? And would its employees wear Lederhosen and Dirndls?? Perhaps the world will never know…

I do have a couple of pictures from the ride, but haven’t transferred them to the computer yet, so hold the line… more action shots to come!

When I got home, I was delighted to discover that some CD’s I ordered from amazon.com had finally arrived…. I got Bebel Gilberto Remixed, for those days and nights when I’m feeling like mellow, rhythmic Brazilian music, and Wynonna “What the World Needs Now,” as I seem to be on a Judds kick as of late. I discovered today that Wynonna is performing with the Seattle Symphony on October 11th, and I really want to go… The catch is: I don’t know of anyone in the area who enjoys Wynonna Judd as much as I do, to the extent that they would go to her show with me on a random Tuesday night…. Any takers???

Oh What a Night...

I’m tired and can barely keep my eyes open this morning (which ironically, I think has nothing to do with the concert last night, as it was over at 10:30PM), but thought I’d post a few choice shots from last night’s Neil Diamond concert that I took on my camera phone. The quality isn’t spectacular, but you’ll get the gist.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Here’s the big screen. Does Neil Diamond still look like my father? Check.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

And on that note, here is an image for your frame of reference: Image hosted by Photobucket.com This is from a Neil Album that I’m guessing came out in the mid to late 70’s. There is a picture of my father around the same time that I can see in my mind right now- I don’t know where it is, but I’ll have to look for it and try to scan it at some point so we can do a point-to-point comparison, but for now, you’ll just have to take my word for it: They look like twins. I have a sneaking suspicion that Neil Diamond might be my long-lost uncle or something….

During one song, I looked over at Allison and I could swear that she was getting watery-eyed. I asked her if she was crying, she said “No, but it he doesn’t play Cracklin’ Rosie, you bet your ass I’ll be crying!”

And the night went on…. Sweet Caroline…. America…. Forever in Blue Jeans…. Play Me…Cherry, Cherry… I Am, I Said… Holy, Holy….You Don’t Bring Me Flowers... on and on and on, but NO Cracklin’ Rosie!

And then the show ended!?! What??? But of course there’s the glimmer of hope that it would be the encore song…. And it WAS!! Followed by Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show (Thanks to Joe, I was able to sing along, as I’ve had this song on my iPod now for a few months…).

Needless to say, during Cracklin’ Rosie, Allison was beside herself with joy, I tried to capture that in a photo, but the picture doesn’t really do it justice…. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Notably missing from the night’s lineup were Song Sung Blue and Hello Again. He also didn’t play Heartlight, but I really can’t stomach that song with a straight face, so I didn’t mind its omission.

All in all, the night pretty much RULED.

And I bought a T-shirt, a black one that says “Diamond Girl” on the front. I can’t wait to wear it to my next special occasion!

A Few Topics to Ponder

1) Being in various states of undress during fire alarms/drill is no fun at all. Especially when the alarm is piercingly loud, almost to the point of making your ears bleed, and you just can’t find your pants fast enough.
2) If I were a professional singer, I would want to be just like Jennifer Warnes
3) I might meet and fall in love with Neil Diamond tonight.

Explanations:

1) Last night, like every night I got home from work and began my usual homecoming process. I change, check my e-mail until Daphne just can’t put up with waiting any longer, then I head out to the dog park with her. Some days I go straight from the dog park to the gym, other days I come home and do other fun, less physically active things like e-mailing, blogging laundry etc… So last night I was past stage 1-A: I had taken off my work clothes and was checking my e-mail in my socks and underwear. Come to think of it, I guess this is pretty normal for me. I was mid-e-mail-check when out of nowhere, my apartment building’s central fire alarm system went off. Took me a while to figure out what the heck it was- it couldn’t have been my smoke detector- that is a loud, pulsing sound. And I wasn’t making pot-stickers. This was a super loud, ear-piercing, deafening, solid scream. Daphne and I were both looking at each other like, “What the heck did you DO??” Then because I have the opposable thumbs in the relationship, I realized that it was the fire alarm. Crap…. I need some pants! But all I want to do is get the hell away from that SOUND! And I can’t leave Daphne inside to burn, and I need to take her out now anyway, so I’ll just go to the park now. But that requires pants AND a shirt… So I threw on some sweats, a dirty t-shirt that was actually inside out (hey, I can say I was trying to bring that fashion back…) and shoved some shoes on my feet grabbed the leash and mouthed to Daphne, “Let’s Go!” She took off as soon as I opened the door. I was running after her and just as I was about to snap her leash on, I realized that somehow my t-shirt got tucked not only into my pants in the back, but also into my underwear, which were at that point, exposed for the rest of my apartment evacuees to view. Hot.

Lesson Learned: Don’t hang out in your underwear. You never know when you’ll need to flee.

2) I’ve been doing a lot of Karaoke research lately (Hey, even Tiger Woods has to practice chipping and putting...) and I’m trying to put together a book of lyrics to a handful of choice Karaoke favorites, so that rather than focus on the words, I can really focus on the musical flair and style of the song next time I’m up on stage at the Rickshaw Tavern off of Lake City Way. So on my play list are a few classic duets including, but not limited to, “Up Where We Belong” and “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life”. BOTH of these songs feature the vocal stylings of one Miss Jennifer Warnes. Who’s that? Yeah, I didn’t know either. But I know now, because I spent too much of my day today (about 15 minutes) researching her. I have determined that she has the best of both worlds: She is accomplished and respected in the music industry, has worked with an array of musicians and has a few (see above…) big hits to her name, and has had a long (and seemingly stable) career as a professional singer. But she’s not famous. At all really. She’s just a normal person, who has a great voice, and makes a living off it. Neat.

3) No explanation, other than I’m going to his concert tonight, and if things go right, he will catch my room key when I throw it on stage and we’ll make beautiful music together. Don’t worry, I’ve already told Jose about it. He fully supports this effort, saying that if he were me, he’d do the same. Which makes me only a little bit nervous.

Cheers and jeers

Okay- I've seen it on other blogs so here are mine:

Jeers to boys who play video games and try to talk to you on the phone at the same time.

Cheers to Bryers ice cream being "buy one get on free" at QFC.

Jeers to having an entire gallon of ice cream in my freezer right now.

Cheers to getting new bike shoes and clipless pedals both on sale at Performance Bicycling in Bellevue.

Huge jeers to the fact that I can't get my old pedals off because I have a stupid, cheap, lame wrench that fails at it's one job: turning things.

Jeers, (but hindsight cheers) to how many times I'll probably fall on my head while learning to use the clipless pedals.

Jeers to having a biopsy of my cervix yesterday. Probably one of the LEAST comfortable things I've ever experienced.

Cheers to the medications they gave me afterward because it hurt real bad and it made me cry.

Cheers also to the nurse who gave me apple juice in tiny paper cups because it also made me light-headed and dizzy.

Jeers to the MTV show, "My Sweet, Sweet Sixteen" for sucking me in with it's ridiculousness and forcing me to watch it whenever it happens to be on...

Jeers to "Laguna Beach, the real OC" for the very same reasons...

Cheers to "The Mediterranean Kitchen" restaurant in Bellevue where I had lunch with Mamma Hundley today.

Jeers to the garlic and olive oil that will subsequently be seeping from my pours for days.

A piece of really good advice

Dear Readers:

If you only pay attention to one thing that I write on this entire web site, let it be this single piece of advice. If you get back together with your boyfriend after a few months off, never, I repeat NEVER use his computer to check your e-mail when you're home alone at his place.

Even the most self-assured, confident girl in the world just can't help but go looking for trouble. Especially when she knows exactly what she's looking for, having received warnings such as: "no, trust me, you don't want to see pictures from that month- I mean, you can if you want, but I really don't think you'd want to."

Please... that's like telling Carnie Wilson that she doesn't really want a stomach staple, she should just watch her portion sizes. In other words: Of Course its bad for me, but do you really expect me to resist temptation? Please...I'm strong, I'm fine. I know what went on with him, he knows what went on with me. I'll spare the details, but long story short, things were pretty "fair and balanced" when we both came back to the table.

But that doesn't mean that I should see pictures of HER... the only thing that seems right to type right now is... blech.

Extreme fits of nausea/jealousy/ guilt (for having totally violated his privacy and being self-righteous about something that I was in no position to be self-righteous about etc), followed by frantic phone calls to friends themed around, "dangit, what do I do now?!"

So that's the lesson I learned this weekend- just don't do it. But if you DO do it, be prepared for some pretty funky feelings.

And I suppose the second lesson (I know, I told you you’d only need to pay attention to one thing, so feel free to ignore this one) is that being an “adult” with just a few years of emotional maturity under my belt makes me feel…like an actual grown up? But in a proud/gratifying sort of way, not in my usual “oh my god, I really AM getting older everyday… look… my skin is more delicate and less resilient!” sort of way. Because when things like that happen, and I have my immediate, primal “visceral reaction” (as Beth so expertly put it), I am able to reflect on it, and communicate with another human being (specifically, Jose) about the experience, know what support I need at that point (a very large hug and lots of reaffirming language) and be able to accept it with open arms (somewhat literally). More of an emotional hiccup than a rollercoaster.

Ahhhh… Big breath…Okay, enough of this full-circle, emotional, let’s talk about feeeeeelings stuff!

The rest of the weekend was all fun: His friend was getting married and he was in the wedding. So that's the context for the weekend. The wedding started out a little slow for me, because I was dateless for most of the early parts (ah the perils of being the Best Man’s date…) Lot's of pretty flowers, good food, and a GREAT speech by the Best Man (more pride from Gina). Danced like fools at the wedding reception, and at one point I think I was being Peppa’ to some other gal’s Salt on the dance floor. Didn’t ever catch her name- I’m guessing she was a cousin or something from Boston? Nice gal- and fun too! And obviously she shared a similar enthusiasm for lip-syncing to early 90’s girl-rap, which is always good. I tried to teach Jose to two-step, but I really only know how to follow, and poorly at that. So that was a bit of a mess, but still fun.

The best part? My dress was good for twirling! (which secretly made me just want to twirl around all by myself all night, like a 6-yer old in a new party dress, but I didn’t let on...)

There was a second reception at a local hotel, which involved left over’s from the formal reception, random bottles of wine, music blaring from a little stereo plugged into the wall, and piecing together suitable hot-tub attire from existing boxer-briefs, t-shirts etc. The somewhat (okay, very) creepy photographer stayed for that part too, which seemed… odd. Having a strange suspicion that most of THOSE shots are never going to show up in any wedding photo-albums. But perhaps in his personal collection? Some pictures:Leaving the church: Will a sword arch ever NOT remind me of the wedding scene in Sound of Music?Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Yes, this is the same dress as the weekend before. Shhhhhh….

The strangest thing happened the next morning. Jose and I went to the Mass service for the family and wedding party. That involved waking up and getting out of the house on the early side of a Sunday morning. I know!?! Crazy! It was actually kind of a nice thing to do on a Sunday morning. And the priest, who came all the way from Boston for the wedding was really easy to listen to. His sermon was on forgiveness, which seemed timely. And then we had brunch, which by 11:30, was both timely AND tasty.

The afternoon plan was to go for a long bike ride, to get ready for the 50 mile ride that we signed up for in two weeks (which is going to kick both of our butts) but we only made it about 10 miles before he blew a tire. Thankfully, my trusty bike repair skills that I acquired as of late kicked in to full gear and I was able to get the tire off the wheel, patch the tube and get the tire/tube set back ON the wheel. Hurrah! Today I’m thinking of going to REI to get clipless peddles and bike shoes- a big investment, but one that I’ve been thinking about for quite some time now.

If you’d like to sponsor me on my bike ride, please feel free!! It’s the Mike Utley Foundations Dam2Dam bike ride to raise money for spinal cord injury research. He was a Coug and played football for WSU in the late 80s’, before playing for the Detroit Lions. He was injured during a game and paralyzed but has remained an athlete ever since. So if you’re a Cougar too, you should give twice!! So… if you want to donate, please click here: http://www.mikeutley.org/shop/product.esiml?PID=4

So, if you've got anything left over after donating to everything else these days, I'd really appreciate your support!!

Giving credit where it is due:

Being the ungrateful harlot that I am, I totally forgot to acknowledge a nice thing. Close your eyes and think back to a post I made many moons ago (or maybe a week and a half ago) that was nothing more than random thoughts. One in particular was:

"When I'm rich and fabulous, I'm going to hire a service to clean my car (inside and out) once a week. I dislike having a dirty car. But I dislike cleaning it more."

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the fact that people read my blog, but when they actually read INTO my blog, and do nice things for me, well that’s just unexpected joy! I love givers.

So- if you stayed with me last week and washed my car and vacuumed/detailed/armor-all’d the interior/organized the crap in the back seat etc, while I was at work then this message is for you: THANKYOU! I liked it.

More wedding joys!

Thank goodness someone took some photos of the reception… By the time I reached the salad course I had used up all of my camera’s memory card. I guess I took too many wine-induced self portraits the night before after the rehearsal dinner… Oh well, that’s what friends are for J I’ve chosen a selection of four of the BEST photos of myself- the ones that really capture those feelings of, “Damnit! Why did the shutter have to close at that particular moment?!?” And “Does my face really make that expression in real life? If so, why hasn’t anyone asked me to stop making it yet?”

This first one was taken as the inspiration for a new cocktail that Brooke and I invented- It has a real snappy name and is going to be a pink drink with floaty things on top that get stuck in your teeth. Shaved coconut or muttled mint leaves were the initial ideas. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Witness the creation of this year’s vintage sorority girl. Note how she is aged for 27-29 years in Oak Barrels to enhance her natural fruitiness. Subtle flavors and nuances are developed when she poses in a large group of her peers under the direction of boyfriends and husbands shouting: “Oh yes Fraulein, make Laaaahv to zie caaamraaah… You must get closah togezeh to really make this vurk… “ in Uber-fake German accents. More like a Falko-esque Austrian accent really.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com Is that my o-face?? Yikes. Better work on that.

I have no witty tag-line to add to this one other than: Enjoy. (but it does capture the essence of “I spilled wine all over me!”)
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I call this one, “Grumplestiltskin” or “Was I getting Scarlet Fever or was that the tannins in the wine?” or maybe, “Am I really a cranky 6-year old trapped in the body of a fun-loving 27-year old?”
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

And I’m including this one because it is good of me, and I need to feel better about myself now.

Baby Hair Continued...

To follow up on my last post that included a photo of a baby with a Mohawk (I know, I know, it wasn’t really a Mohawk, that was just he way his hair was growing in…) I thought I’d post a couple of celebrity fauxhawk shots for your comparing and contrasting pleasure. In case you don’t want to scroll ALL the way down, here he is again, to refresh your memory: Image hosted by Photobucket.com I just hope that no one ever criticizes the child at the wedding by looking at him and saying something, “Shyeah, that’s soooo 2003!

Appreciating things, including my health.

I don’t want to jinx myself by saying that I appreciate my health, but after seeing so much destruction caused by this hurricane, and being completely unscathed its hard not to appreciate an awful lot of things. But one in particular that gets special notice today is my health. I just cringe to think of all of those affected by this hurricane even more they are confined to their own poor health. I appreciate my body. I appreciate my legs that can run away from scary things and my arms that can swim/paddle/move heavy objects. I appreciate my lungs that breathe unaided, and my blood that keeps its glucose levels and cholesterol levels on auto-pilot without a trip to the pharmacy. My eyes don’t even need contacts lenses (and associated accoutrements) to see clearly. I am appreciating the fact that maybe I should keep at least one day’s worth of food in my house… (which is difficult when Daphne eats it all at once on the rare occasion that I forget to lock the fridge!). I suppose my biggest take home messages to myself on all of this have been:1) take care of your body, keep it in good, working condition 2) Breastfeed your babies. I want to throw-up when I think about all of those babies that are starving in the absence of formula and/or clean water to mix it with 3)_________________________. Still working on a third. I know its in there, but it hasn’t set yet.

Man Alive.

And all this on top of a great Labor Day weekend. I’m not going to apologize for having a great time this weekend at Beth’s wedding. In wedding-land, the biggest disaster was the 4:00 shuttle to the Winery never showing at the Hotel to pick up half of the wedding guests. But the biggest triumph was getting the operations manager of Le Grande Affaire (yes, there really were that many “e’s” ) on the horn and assertively telling him that I didn’t give a rat’s ass what the contract did or didn’t specify, that he needed to make a 28-passenger shuttle magically appear at the San Jose Fairmont to bring said 28 passengers to the Winery…. 20 minutes ago!!!! So, while we can’t say that the wedding got off without a hitch, we CAN say that the wedding, while getting started a few minutes late, was FABULOUS in its entirety. Okay, I don’t think I used the term “rat’s ass.” I think I said something more to the effect of: “Sir, the language of the contract at this point, or who’s misinterpretation of it is causing this problem, is really NOT of interest to me. What I need are wedding guest. Here. Now.”

Other than that, I just did what I was told to do which required a delicious non-existent amount of leadership on my part. Its super easy to be a bride’s maid when the bride is as on-the-ball as Beth.

To protect the innocent, I am not going to post photos here, but if you want to the link to my album, I’d be glad to e-mail it to you. I will however, post some of the nicer shots of yours truly on wedding eve…

But here is one from the rehearsal dinner. I don’t normally like to exploit children, but his hair was growing in with a Mohawk flair, and I have to give the kid credit for pulling off the look almost as well as David Beckham himself.
Image hosted by Photobucket.com and I’ve always wanted to black out people’s eyes….

After the rehearsal dinner, and after several bottles of wine were shared among our tablemates, we went out in San Jose. Here is Kelly trying to fill me with the love of Jesus by baptizing me in a fountain in town. I heard that Beth’s friends Laura and John go to that church where you go all the way in the water. In your underpants. For Jesus of course. But I didn’t get any photos of that. Sorry Erik. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Here we are after my conversion.

Is it Wednesday already?

Why oh why has this girl been neglecting her blog? Well I can tell you this- I flossed my teeth last night, so I’m certainly not neglecting my gums. Which reminds me, I need to schedule my regular 6-month cleaning appointment at my dentists office…

I’ve been fretting (for a detailed investigation on the total fret experience, please see http://www.fretme.blogspot.com/ AKA, Pennsylvania’s most interesting Blog…) all month long about giving the toast at Beth’s wedding (which is coming up ANY DAY NOW…) Not fretting so much about the process of giving the toast, but what I was actually going to say. I wanted to make it snappy, short, sweet, multi-generationally appropriate etc, and I think I’ve managed to capture at least 50% of those goals. Don’t worry guys, it IS appropriate. It is also pretty short. Snappy and sweet however, are open for discussion.

So I’ve been working on that…. And what else….. What other legitimate reasons can I throw out there for being a fair-weather blogger? I’ve had a house guest for the last 4 days. It was a really good four days.

What else… Tonight is Napoleon Dynamite at Marymoor Park in Redmond. They’ve been doing outdoor movies right next to the dog park, so we’ve got a group going for the season finale tonight. The evening will involve dogs, friends, and a great flick. Just hoping it doesn’t get rained out…which it might.

I just feel like if I’m going to blog, I should have something that at least I think is somewhat clever (regardless of its actual or perceived cleverness by others), and I haven’t felt very clever lately. Perhaps it’s a lingering feeling of guilt for having thoughts of “Aw man! Why can’t WE have cool tropical storms like Katrina?! We never get any interesting weather here in Seattle!” when she was in fact, a relatively small tropical storm buzzing around Boca Raton. Now she’s wiped out major cities along the Gulf Coast and taken hundreds of lives. “I guess I spoke too soon,” is a bit of an understatement huh?

In the famous, but irritatingly early-90’s words of Bart Simpson, Aye Carumba!

I’m going to take my dog to the movies now.

As IF...

I don't get enough boiler-room jack-asses calling me throughout the day to beg me to put my "best clients" into "emerging opportunities" that offer unique access to the nanotechnology sector.... Yeah, we get cold-calls every once in a while from guys pushing penny stocks, so we'll move the market, they sell out at the top and make a quick buck for their people. Its usually kind of fun, as when they call, we've adopted the fun practice (inspired by Aaron Johnson) of telling these guys something to the effect of; "Actually, I don't do any business in penny stocks, I typically stick with AAA-rated, insured municipal bonds, but my colleague, YOUR NAME HERE, deals EXCLUSIVELY in the penny stocks, you might give him a call. I'm sure he'd be happy to give you an hour to 90 minutes of his time to discuss some of your ideas. His direct line is XXX-XXXX, but let me transfer you to him now..."

Ahhhh, its fun to give people shit sometimes... I like not being a rookie anymore. Well, not the rooki-est of rookies at least.

So- if the above rambling makes no sense to you, that means that you didn't see the "comment" that was left by a spammer telling is all about a miraculous new stock that was going to the MOON!!! I deleted it. This, and a couple other random commercial comments have lead me to tack on a word verification requirement before any comments can be left. I hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone, and I hope it keeps the spammers at bay...

Checking In...

I'm still here. Haven't forgotten about you. But I just haven't found a the time to compose any thoughts lately. I think if I did blog now, it would just be an incoherent basket of statements and thoughts such as:

Chocolate milk is quite possibly my favorite food in the world. And yes, I consider it a food.

I'm still amazed at the ridiculousness of the White Lies chardonnay concept.

I have a sun burn on my nose.

Why the hell can't I get to bed before 11PM during the week? It makes me a zombie by the time Friday afternoon rolls around.

I think I actually like Ashton Kutcher as an actor. And I'm not ashamed to admit that.

I don't know how to mail-merge okay? I hate not being able to do simple administrative tasks. It makes me feel dependent on an assistant. It makes me feel like a man.

I have a client meeting in 35 minutes and should be preparing for that instead of doing this.

Being a reformed nail-biter means that you have to spend a fair amount of time on nail filing. They just keep growing, and I just have to keep filing. Odd concept. Still getting used to it.

I have a video due back at Hollywood video tomorrow by noon. How much you want to bet that I forget to take it back tonight and get some monster late fees?

When I'm rich and fabulous, I'm going to hire a service to clean my car (inside and out) once a week. I dislike having a dirty car. But I dislike cleaning it more.

That's all I've got. Brain is one empty. Gas tank is not. (But wallet is)

God I hate foofy drinks...

Wow. I was responding to an evite today and got a pop-up ad that linked to this site...

http://www.whiteliewines.com/whitelie/home.jsp

Am I the only wine-drinking, dessert-eating, professional woman who is totally outraged by this concept?

I’m not going to rant. I’m just not going to. But I really want to, and the more I look through this web site, the more I want to say, “Oh, please… could someone just gag me with a Raspberry Merlot?”

If you’ve really got a strong stomach, try clicking on “read our story” link under Created For Women, By Women: And That’s No Lie!

Want to know something really scandalous?? I mean really… Its naughty. Very naughty? Are you sure??? Okay…

Sometimes, when I’m feeling really lonely and missing my man, I turn down the lights, light some candles, turn on some soft music, slip into my robe… and just give myself the most amazing mud mask facial EVER!! And I might even have a chocolate cookie afterward!! Tee hee!! It’s TRUE you guys!!! I do it! I’m such a sinner… but I’ll never tell… its my special secret. Ohmygawd… I’m like so embarrassed!!!

Once again, can I get a “Gag me with an Arbor Mist!” from my people out there???

Like I said, I’m trying not to rant, but I have to close by adding my last thought: Have you ever watched MTV, or been to some youth-oriented retail place and seen products that are marketed toward young people in a really ineffective way, that is clearly some corporate schmo’s (highly inaccurate) “vision” of what America’s Youth wants? Yeah, me too.

I think this White Lie’s Chardonnay add campaign is some 20-something, new-grad-chick-with-a-marketing-degree’s vision of what “ you know, like OLDER women” want in their life. So to her I say this:

Katherine,* (wow- that sounds so old and grown-up, I’m still used to calling you Katie!!) what you don’t understand is that women, after they leave the hallowed walls of the Kappa Beta Pi house on Greek row,** don’t give a rat’s ass if people know they listen to boy-bands, drink wine to the point of drunkenness if they so desire, watch reality-TV, or even God forbid… eat dessert. So stop marketing to us as if we are a bunch of low-self-esteemed, desperate-to-fit-in wannabes okay? Christ.

* Okay, it could be Ashleigh, Christy, Heather, Rebecca (Becky), Jenni- you get my point…
**I was in a sorority and loved every minute of it, so I’m allowed to make fun.

I've got a wicked case of P.V.

If having and maintaining a Phone Voice were a criminal offense, I’d be guilty in the first degree. Honestly, I think I would have to register as a Phone Voice Offender. Like, maybe even a Level 3, as I am “highly likely to re-offend.”

My neighbors would have to be notified by the authorities that I live in their vicinity. They might have to warn their children not to answer the phone if they suspect it might be me calling.

Would I still be able to vote and have a hand-gun?

I can’t help it! Maybe it’s the industry that I work in, or maybe I have some innate desire to over-compensate for a self-consciousness about being young and inexperienced (though I’m getting less young and less green every day. Some might even call me an “old timer” at this point). Or maybe it’s just the subject matter that I generally discuss with clients. I mean, is it even possible to say something like, “I’m planning to evaluate your account with more depth in the coming week. At that point, if there are any reallocations or modifications that need immediate attention, I will be in contact with you to discuss a plan of action” without having even a hint of PV?? I don’t know. And really, I don’t care. All I know is that every once in a while I’ll catch the sound of my own voice and think, “jeeeze….who the heck is THAT corporate schlep?? I bet she’s wearing a beige pant-suit!” And then I’m like “Whoa! That’s ME and I AM wearing a pant-suit!” But it’s not beige… today at least.

Don't cry, I'm still here!

**before I forget: Please notice my updated links- I've added a few, and taken away the link to the Carl Vinson (despite improving relations with the US Navy and Yours truly, its just not very interesting now because the ship is in port and just chillin'). If you want your web-site linked up, let me know! Also- if anyone can tell me how to fix my google ad bar from being stuck under my header, I sure could use some advice. Me no know computers. Okay- back to regularly scheduled blogging***

Well, I'll be darned. Its been quite a spell since my last entry! I learned this weekend that more than a couple (yeah, so 3...) people actually notice when I don't blog with regularity! I feel so loved, but aye, what responsibility!?!

High/low-lights of the last week include, but are not limited to: 1)Kicking ass in a major way at our last kickball game of the season, ensuring a worst-case-scenario of finishing 2nd in the league this year. If we do well in the play-offs this week, a championship is ours at long last!! (highlight). 2) Losing 9 colleagues and friends this week at work to "corporate restructuring" and having a hearty dose of survivors' guilt. Okay, so they weren't all friends, but some of them were and I will really miss having them in my every-day life. If you're reading this, it totally blows without you. (low-light). 3) Getting SOLD a new credit card over the phone because the guy was really good at handling my objections, and was polite, respectful, and I feel for anyone who has to do phone solicitations for a living (low light, but I hope he got some sort of bonus for it) 4) Katie's wedding on Saturday, which marked my maiden voyage to Shelton, WA. For more fun wedding details, including a photo of me sleeping on the floor in the manner of King Tut, please visit Erik's blog at http://www.008.blogspot.com/ (high-light). And there have been a few other pretty cool highlights that aren't quite blog-worthy, so if you're reading this thinking, "Damnit woman! I thought my breakthroughs would at least be a highlight!?!?" rest assured that they were, silly. But this jaded skeptic isn't going to go public anytime soon.

SO- I finally have some pictures to share...
hang on.... they're still uploading....

I love buying CD’s. Yeah, it’s a lot cheaper to get a copy from a friend, but there is something magical about unwrapping a brand-spanking new CD, looking through the liner notes, reading the acknowledgments, lyrics and exploring the pictures. Granted, there is nothing more disappointing than doing this for a CD that ultimately is a let-down, OR that has no/minimal liner notes. But even with those risks, I’m still committed to buying new CD’s- I’m probably down to about 1 or 2 a month on average. More like 1 these days. But I just bought one today and I haven’t even listened to the whole thing yet, but I know its one of my favorites of all time. And the weird thing is, its nothing new. Its exactly the same CD that came out, that I loved 10 years ago. Only its TOTALLY different.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Maybe you’ve heard it before, maybe you’ve heard it again, but if you don’t have Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill- Acoustic, then you just, well, you really need to get it. Its just damned good.

It’s Jagged Little Pill. Only its totally reborn, she’s singing the same songs, but they’re different, not better, certainly not worse, but totally different, and beautiful. More mature? I want to say that… she’s forgiven, but hasn’t forgotten (but that sounds so cheesy!). The words are all still there, and some of them are the same angry words, but language is more than words, and she’s happy now, and the songs are so… refreshing? Not dismissive, just moving on. Stronger.

"You Oughta Know" is perfect. And it is beyond me how someone can sing the words "And everytime I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it" and make it sound... cathartic instead of angry. But she pulled it off. Awesome.

When it comes down to it, she just has a great voice and great writing. This is one of those CD’s where every single track could stand alone, and they still can. Hooray Alanis! You are a smart cookie! And you are once again, my favorite Canadian!

** edited to add: Okay- the stupid quote about Real Intimacy in the earlier post was credited to a Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski of "Health Communications, Inc." I posted this last night, and have had a few questions as to who the heck these people are... Sorry for the confusion- that's who they are!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I did another google search. Here are Jim and Judy. Don't they look happy? Don't they look like they're on marriage number eleventeen? How much you wanna bet they're into swapping? Er, I mean, "open marriage."

Dark moods and generosity.... fer christ...

Pardon the Rant.

Ring the bells, sound the horns, strike up the band, it’s Double Blog Thursday Thunder!! Or maybe I just need to say to the world: Back OFF! For the LOVE OF PETE!

I’ve been trying not to notice things in the last few days, trying to blow off little sights and sounds that ring a little bell of “twiiiing- he doesn’t want you in his life anymore.” Its actually more of a “thwack” of a club than at “Twiiiiiing” of a bell. Well, before this past weekend it was a twiiiing. This weekend it turned into the thwack. But I needed a Thwack to get over it, you know? So that’s what I’m doing- onward! Seattle is too beautiful and happy this time of year to ignore that fact that I’m well, beautiful and happy too J ( I mean heck, underneath it all, I’m still just a happy girl. And I’m a total hottie.).

So Lindsey is coaching me on match.com (maybe I can find someone who looks good on paper?) , I’m putting renewed efforts into my Canada-America Mid 20’s Cultural Exchange Program (which ironically has no actual connections to Canada, other than the nationality of its founding member), so I can continue finding young men who, well, let’s face it, look really good (but not on paper). I even went to Bike Maintenance 101 class last night at REI and can now proudly say that the next time I get a flat, I’ll be able to fix it! I’m empowered! I rock! I’m going to have a pretty good month at work! I finally found my perfect menu item at Taco Del Mar (after years of tacos and burritos that just weren’t “me” I discovered the chicken quesadilla is just right.) Things are good!

So I can totally pretend not to notice that its Seafair weekend and I have to reroute my drives because the Blue Angels are flying over my head all week. I mean really, its not like people in my office are even yelling down the hallways, “Hey- the Blues are flying- you can see them from the window!!” Heck, I barely notice that the city of Seattle is SWARMING with Navy people in their whites cruising around the town aimlessly. Sometimes even walking right into the street in front of my car, crossing against the signal at a cross walk, causing me to almost hit them. Barely even notice.

Last night when I checked my e-mail, I had all these weirdo’s from match.com who wanted to talk to me. Quick screen: call to Lindsey:

Me: “Um, I really don’t want to reply to any of these guys- am I missing something, and I just bitchy?”
Her: Hummmm lots of no’s. But you should write back to this one. And this one. And that one. I noticed a mistake in your profile, I’ll fix it- what’s your password again? Great. She’s a swell coach.

Then later I get this e-mail from a guy who I’m able to see, on my very own, looks good on paper. “Yey! I’m proud of myself! I figured it out on my own!”. 35 years old, Lives in Seattle. Newly back to the area. Pilot. Nice looking guy. Okay, I’ll take the bait. Maybe we can talk about the uncertainly of pensions for those poor guys at Delta and United or something. I write back. Nothing interesting, just some small talk. And I think to myself, maybe I should read his whole profile. So I click on it while I’m humming the “I love technology...we met in a chatroom…” song in manner of Kip Dynamite.

So I read on. Oh right, of course. He’s a pilot for the US Navy. He actually lives in Anacortes, but posts that he lives in Seattle, because its hard to meet “quality people” in Anacortes. I admit, at this point, I do say to myself, “Ah nuts. You’re killin’ me.” But no big woop. He’s a good guy, and at least he doesn’t fly the SAME plane or anything.

So at work today, with the Blue Angles shaking our glass partitions, and stockbrokers with renewed childhood dreams, craning their necks to look out the windows, I decided that I wanted some hot chocolate. Kind of an unusual thing for me. I’m normally a coffee or water girl mid-day. But we have packets of Swiss Miss in the break room. So I head in and open the cupboard where said Swiss Miss is stored. Along with a variety of Celestial Seasonings Teas. Dang it! We’re out of hot chocolate! But front and center is a box of tea that has somehow fallen out of formation with all its other tea box friends. Its starting at me head-on. I look at it, and I shit-you-not, this is what is says on the side panel that is facing me, word-for-word:
-Real Intimacy-
“Imagine it- someone knows you, all of you, your talents and eccentricities, your generosity and dark moods, what you look like at your best and at your worst. Imagine that you’ve opened all of yourself to that person, no masks, no affectations and that someone says, ‘Yes, I see you, all of you, and I love you for the person you are…’ That’s what makes love so precious. That’s what real romance and intimacy are all about.” -The New Intimacy, Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski

ON A GOD DAMNED BOX OF TEA.

At this point, I have a hard time not responding in my head with a “Yeah, and imagine that person is moving to the other side of the country in a few months, and doesn’t want you there with him, because he knows that you’re not ‘the one’, but doesn’t want to break up with you until he has to move because he wants to keep mind-fucking you and having fun and enjoying your ‘generosity and dark moods’. So you know what Celestial Seasonings?? You know what you can do with your Real Intimacy? You can GO FUCK YOURSELF!”.

Whoa! Did I really have that kind of reaction to a lame-ass poem on a box of Almond Sunset TEA? Yes, I sure did.

So world, could you please throw me a fucking bone here? I’m really sick and tired of being sad and confused and frustrated. I really want to just have a nice little memories, a nice little summer and end this nonsense. I’m ready to rock. Let’s go. What is it world? Are you jealous of my ability to accept reality and make the best of it? What, do you think I’m going to steal your man? Well maybe I will! What? Did you just call me a bitch? Oh no you DIDN’T!! You better watch yourself. Stupid Ho.

Maybe I'M the one who's Ready to Rock?

A few days ago I mentioned a t-shirt that said, "Ready to Rock." Awesome.

I googled "Sweet guitar riffs" today (I might have had a reason, but I might have just been fantasizing about being Pat Benetar... again) and I found this.
http://www.guitarnoise.com/article.php?id=207

No, I don't play guitar, never have. But it's articles like this that make me wish I did. And just look at the author. He totally rocks! In a Canadian sort of way. But I don't think he would be an eligible candidate for my Canada-America Mid-20's Cultural Exchange Program. Don't think Lindsey would let him past the initial screening phase. Which is probably a good thing.

Anyway- enjoy the article, and Don't forget to Rock Out. (with your cock out?) Or as Justin would counter: Hang out with your Wang (or Huang) Out. Heehee.... I said wang.

Books: My Top Five of Oh Five...so far.

Okay- Since January, I haven’t really finished a whole lot more than 5 books, but here are the ones that qualify. While they may not be the best books in the world, they’re the ones that were good enough for me to read all the way through. And that’s big for me. A Actually have a book that was so inconsequential that I ready the entire thing, save the last 4 pages, and never actually finished it. I forget the name, but it was by the Author of Bridget Jones’ Diary and it came out about a year ago. There’s a picture of a lady snorkeling in a giant martini glass on the cover. Very blah. The character was nothing even close to Bridget.

Here they are, in my order of reading, not in order of preference (And these weren't necessarily written in 2005, but its the year I read them. Yes, it IS all about me):

1) Angels and Demons: For a long time, I had an aversion to reading the DaVinci Code because I was sick of hearing everyone and their brother raving about it. But I bought this book in the Dallas airport on my way home from a work training as a gift for someone who likes the author. I decided to read it on the way back and I really loved it. A very suspenseful and captivating story. The kind of book you can’t wait to get back to. It was my first Dan Brown book, so nothing seemed to rhyme with his other books yet. I compare this (loosely) to my first Christopher Guest movie, which was Best In Show. This is solely because I wasn’t expecting anything at all when I saw that movie, and was delighted. Many will say that Spinal Tap, or perhaps Waiting for Guffman is his true best work, but Best in Show will always have a special, hilarious place in my heart. Don’t girls always say that about their firsts?)
2) DaVinci Code: Okay, I was hooked. I caught the fever. But I still refuse to read the Harry Potter series. I NEARLY veered from that path last weekend. Thank GAWD than an emotionally draining, yet cathartic discussion ensured so I didn’t have to keep reading the book. Anyway- I liked DaVinci Code, a very entertaining story, and thought provoking. Do I “buy it?” Maybe? I really wasn’t totally sold on the alternative in the first place, so it wasn’t some sort of life-shattering/affirming book for me. But a great story. And I like seeing religious conservatives get all bent out of shape when a little fictional story puts an alternative perspective on their beliefs. That’s fun to watch. But the anemic, and inconsequential romantic undertones between the two main characters seems a little familiar.

2.5) Deception Point: I had the Fever. And the only thing that could cure me was more Dan Brown. Well… actually I had this book on the book shelf- was given to me as a recommended read. I think I had started it in ’04, but didn’t quite get past the first chapter. I thought I’d jump back into it with a renewed interest, thus qualifying it as an “oh five” read. Not too shabby. Certainly interesting enough to power through the book on the exercise bike at the gym. But at this point, I’m getting a little tired of the 40-something intellectual as the leading man, who is somewhat of a broken man when it comes to love, until that is, he realizes while escaping death, that he really does love that young, vivacious go-getter female lead who’s father was very accomplished- but did she ever really get the love she needed from Daddy? Or was Daddy too much in love with his craft?

3) The Multi-Orgasmic Man: Sexual Secrets Every Man Should Know: Okay, don’t judge. I first ran a search for this book because I saw a guy reading it at Glo’s Diner on Capitol Hill. He was sitting there, alone at his table, with the book and its cover out for all to see. I was with Allison at the time and of course we noticed it. I think he liked that. Recently ran a search for the book because this story came up in conversation, and I was wondering, and somewhat willing to bet, if/that this guy was doing some sort of psychological experiment, and there was some grad student note-taker behind a silk plant noting how many people made eye contact with him, or blushed after reading the title of the book. I think my initial response was “no way is he, or that book for real.” I seriously thought it had to be a fake book. But no, its real. And I found it on amazon.com. Then I bought as a gift- kind of a gag gift if you will. A gift given with the sole intention of embarrassing the recipient when he opened it in front of his friends. But I read it first. (Kind of like Angels and Demons). The first half of the book pretty much dispels the idea that a man’s orgasm and ejaculation are at all connected physiologically, and that our western cultures just sees them as one in the same. That one means the other. The book is all about how that isn’t true at all. Okay. Great. But the SECOND half of the book is what qualifies it onto my list. Its pretty much a How to Please Your Partner commentary. But this is the best How to Please Your Partner commentary that I have ever read. I never thought I’d be singing praises for a sex book, certainly not writing in the margins and highlighting chapters like “Thrusting Technique” and “The Art of the Screw” but I did. Good Stuff. Spot on. Ladies, buy this book for your men. Its kind of like when you man buys lingerie for you. Sure, its “for” you, but really its for him. Sure, this book is really for him, but its really for you too. Don’t get me wrong, this will not make bad sex good, but it will make phenomenal sex phenomenalER.

4) Kite Runner: Just a dang good book. And an important book to read. Mixes a splash of history with a twist of current events, poured into a universal coming of age story about friendship, innocence, forgiveness and love of country, family and friends. More people should read this book. Why do I feel like a cocktail all of a sudden…

5) Under the Banner of Heaven: Don’t get me wrong, this is a good book. I think it could have been better. I enjoyed it because it gives a great background into the history of Mormonism and kind of answers all of those questions about the origin of the faith, basic beliefs etc without being religious propaganda and/or having a 21 year old blonde kids with acne and a clip-on tie named “Elder so-and-so” in your living room. But who knows, some Mormons might find it anti-Mormon propaganda? But the book really isn’t about Mormons, its about religious fundamentalists, in this case the FLDS “church” (fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints) which from what I can tell, has no formal, recognized or authorized connection to the LDS church. What the book doesn’t do (and could have done) is give much of an answer to, or even a suggestion for an answer to the questions of: How do we as a human race know when to “say when” to religion? At what point is something that is valued, praised and modeled by most societies, in one way or another, become toxic? And who/what exactly is authorized or capable of making that kind of decision? But that’s a pretty touch question to answer. And at the end of it, you might feel the way you’d feel when you read some long academic research piece that concluded at the end that “it is clear from these studies that more research is warranted.”

So now here’s my predicament: What should I read next? I have some books that were given to me that I haven’t ready yet, and if one YOU gave me is on this list, please don’t be offended that I haven’t read it yet! Since this great weather, I’m less inclined to use the exercise bike and more inclined to use my real bike. Which has cut down considerably on my reading time. Here’s what I’ve got in the bull-pen (in no particular order)

1) The Road to Al-Qaeda: I bought this so I could understand more. This curiosity came from reading Under the Banner of Heaven. A non-fiction book. Haven’t started it. Great, I hope putting that here doesn’t make my site come up for some Patriot Act review…
2) Life of Pi: Given to me to read. Not sure if it was a recommendation based on what that person thought I would like to read, or more of a, “I’ve got his book, don’t need it anymore, nothing else to do with it, guess I’ll send it to Gina” Probably a bit of both.
3) Middlesex: A birthday present.
4) Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time: Given to me based on a “I just read this and think you’ll love it” recommendation
5) The Crimson Petal and the White: Recommended a long time ago. Purchased a long time ago. Has been collecting dust for a long time- haven’t even cracked the cover.
6) The Red Tent: Same deal- recommended a long time ago, bought it, never got around to reading it.

So my friends: What should I read next??

Okay, here it is...

The site that tells me I look like Anna Kornakova and Ashley Judd. Nice site. Niiiice site. But one time it told me that I looked like Punky Brewester. But that actress ended up having huge cans as I recall. So THAT'S not a match. http://www.play-analogia.com then go to "try it" on the top menu bar. You have to use a photo that is a stright-on head shot, so do your best, and just for fun, let me know who you look like.

Back in Action

Okay, as I return to my blogging duties, I bring with me a new tool that will surely add a whole new dimension to Ginapalooza. A camera phone. I finally buckled down and bought a new phone last night. Actually, the buying of the new phone wasn’t so hard- it was the renewing of the Verizon contract for two years that was hard. Cripes. I had been considering doing it for a several months, as I was using a ghetto, old-school Motorola brick-like thing (as I found it was better in battery life AND call reception than my newer, temporarily lost, but then recovered LG flip phone). I was also just out of my contract period and eligible for a new phone at a lower price upon renewal. I’ve actually liked Verizon quite well since I started using them, but many months ago, I was advised by a certain naval aviator to NOT renew on Verizon but switch to Cingular when my contract expired, so that I could have free mobile-to-mobile minutes with him. But okay, I really get it this time, I’m not going to be talking much to said aviator anymore. And I’m okay with that. And you know what, I like Verizon damnit, so I’m sticking with them.

But anyway- I finally have a camera phone, and I sprung for one that apparently has a pretty good camera- relative to most camera phones at least. Or the sales guy was lying to me. Either are viable options. Now all I need to do is get better at using it discretely. Today would have been a great opportunity. I went to Taco Time for lunch and there was a guy there with a mullet, wearing a black T-shirt with “Ready to Rock” in bold white block letters. Sweet! But I was alone, and didn’t want him to think I was a stalker. The last thing I need is a reputation as “the girl who stalks guys with mullets who are ready to rock.” I mean really, who wants to be THAT girl??

Hopefully next time such an opportunity comes along, I’ll be with someone else, so I can pretend I’m taking a photo of them, while the actual subject of the photograph is strategically placed in the background. My two best experiences with this strategy were #1 in the train station in The Hauge (Den Haag HS for the Dutchies out there) where there was a seemingly normal guy just standing there, looked like he was waiting for someone, but he was wearing bright yellow wooden shoes. It was classic. So I had Allison stand in between this guy and me, so I could take his picture, while the world thought I was taking a picture of her (a far more socially acceptable act) and #2 Same scenario, only the actual photo subject was a gigantic menorah on the lawn of a house in Berkley. Seriously, it was over 6 feet tall. So Beth stood in the foreground for me. What a good sport.

So get excited people. Because some of the Greater Seattle Area’s “What Not to Wear According to Gina” photos will be coming soon!!
